In 2000, Michael Schumacher finally won the Formula 1 World Championship for Ferrari. It ended his long quest to bring glory to the Scuderia, their last championship victory coming 21 years earlier, back in 1979.
This painting portrays the German legend on his way to victory and title at the Japanese Grand Prix. The Suzuka circuit is iconic for so many reasons, including its figure of eight layout and funfair behind the pit straight. This piece shows the beautiful F1-2000 flying through sector one, with the iconic rollercoaster framing the car in the background.
I have used my usual high contrast highlights and shadows on the car, while using a bigger brush to visualise the out-of-focus rollercoaster in the background. Muted colours and washes were layered on to depict the overcast weather, seen throughout that famous day at Suzuka.
This Grand Prix was an iconic moment and fans of F1, Schumacher or Ferrari will understand the relevance this race had on the history of the sport.
